January 8 story and pictures

The morning dawned cool and clear. After breakfast at the hotel we walked to the Uffizi and spent about 3 hours looking and learning about the art/artists/politics/philosophy leading up to the 15th and 16th century as well as a bit of what came immediately after. We studied works by Cimabue, Giotto, Buoninsegna, Fabiano, Bottocelli, Di Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, and Caravagio. No picture taking is allowed.
We then broke for lunch and had some free time to further explore the beautiful city of Florence.
The late afternoon session was at the Galleria dell’ Accademia (which is right around the corner from our hotel) where we continued our look at great Renaissance art and unpacking what was going on around it. We studied works by Michelangelo, including his mythic and iconographic David. Again, no picture taking is allowed. What we learned yesterday at the restoration houses certainly enhanced our understanding of all that we saw today.
Tomorrow we travel to Siena.
